Film Opening Genre - Dramedy

Dramedy (Comedy-drama)

My group and I have decided on a dramedy (comedy-drama) as the genre for our film opening. It is basically a film that is a comedy and a drama, and "dramedy" is just a mix of those two words. Dramedies portray events with comedic and dramatic elements integrated as part of the development. The genre is not meant to be a drama or comedy with only some elements of the other genre integrated. It is meant to have a balance with approximately the same amount of elements from each genre.

These films must focus mainly on drama elements such as character development, intense emotions and inner conflict for the plot. Other movies such as adventure, action, and scifi most of the time, do not pertain to the dramedy genre. What separates these movies is that the main story line is primarily adventure. Even if it still has comedy and drama, it is not considered to be a dramedy.

I am looking to focus more on teen dramedy for my film opening. These films contain mostly teenage characters and problems relating to teenage life. The conflicts are usually related to other teens in the film. It could be a conflict in between themselves or a conflict between themselves and a situation. Also, it includes the irresponsible, reckless, and rebellious nature of teens and uses that to develop the plot.

Music Marketing Project

Genre: R&B (Rhythm and Blues)

Current marketing trends within R&B

A well known R&B artist is Bryson Tiller. Most of his marketing is done through social media and digital platforms. He communicates with his fans through Instagram where he teases and makes announcements about his music. Songs from his albums have been released before the actual album is released to get people interested in future content. He releases his music videos on big streaming platforms such as Vevo and YouTube. He also releases his music through digital streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Google Play Music, etc.

Artist Development

My artist is “Hooded Angel” who is an upcoming R&B artist from Inglewood, California. I chose to develop his brand by portraying him as a person who was raised in a high crime area and he had to use crime as a way to support his family, but he eventually got out of it. He would be promoted on social media such as Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. The target audience are teens and a lot of them can relate to where he came from and the struggles he went through. This helps to develop his brand because the audience can really enjoy and understand what he is trying to communicate through his music.

Marketing Products

Website: Hooded Angel Website (<-- Click Link)

I created marketing products to promote my artist, one of them being a website. On this website, photos of the artist can be seen along with links to all of the social media. It includes a free snippet of his music and the music video can be viewed. Also, there are tour dates and a description of the artist himself.

Music Video

Another marketing product I created was a music video. It was released on YouTube and promoted on social media. It tells a story of his past and some of the things he did. It symbolically uses fire, and it shows how life keeps passing by and you eventually have to make something worthy out of it.

What I Learned

I learned that there are many elements that are part of the marketing and production process. It is difficult for an upcoming artist to become well known because everything has to be just right. Through the production of the music video, I learned that new ideas can come that improve the quality and content of the video. Also, you have to be very prepared with all the resources you need for filming because if not, it becomes more difficult than it already is. Through marketing, I learned that you need a lot of time and sometimes people to efficiently control all the aspects of marketing. For example, all the social media needs to be updated consistently and there needs to be a minimum amount of errors.

Representation Analysis

The advertisement for H&M includes people from all sorts of social classes, ages, genders, races, and ethnicities. It tried to include a very broad range of people. When the audience views all these representations they can assume that the commercial is directed to a very large variety of people. It did not want to make anyone feel like they were excluded. The audience feels like they are part of the message of the commercial. The advertisement wanted to show that no matter who you are and what you wear, anyone can recycle their clothes.

The advertisement for axe does not represent a wide variety of people. It represents mostly white males and females. It shows one white man attracting a large amount of females and it basically coneys that that is the type of female that males should want. It doesn't represent other types of people that might have different interests in women or that don't care as much of their looks. It also shows that these types of women would be attracted to a white male. The non white male audience of this advertisement might not feel like they are being represented. People might think that not all men want this and it is not representative of a very large part of the male population.

Genre Research - Action

The action genre is filled with events that are destructive, dangerous, and fast. The target audience of action films is within the ages 15 and 40 because young people enjoy these movies when they are teens and they tend to keep enjoying them as they grow up.

Action films usually consist of one or more protagonists who have to overcome a problem, usually caused by the antagonist. To overcome this problem they have to go through a lot of challenges that are filled with action. A lot of the time they are fighting enemies who clearly outnumber them or who seem as a very challenging threat. There are usually action filled parts throughout the movie that all lead up to a major action scene towards the end, in which it’s basically like the “final boss” or challenge. In this part, it seems like the protagonist is hand to hand with the challenge and anyone could win, but in the end the protagonist wins after struggling a lot.

There is usually loud music playing during the parts with the most action. The editing is fast paced to keep up with the flow of the movie and make it more fun to watch, instead of making it slow and boring. Many special effects and stunts are used to fill these action packed moments. Sometimes they use stunt doubles which are people who put themselves in dangerous situations in place of the actor or actress to prevent injury. Some special effects have become easier because of the advancing technology. For example CGI, which stands for “computer-generated imagery”, is used in situations where it would be very hard or impossible to recreate in real life.

Specific actors are casted in these productions because they have experience in action films and the audience is more familiar with them. The plot occurs in easily recognizable locations such as famous cities. Normally, the same directors direct these films because it costs a lot of money to make and they have a reputation because they know how to direct action films.

An example of an action film is Mission: Impossible – Fallout, directed by Christopher McQuarrie. The majority of this film takes place in the famous city of Paris. Tom Cruise plays the protagonist in this film and he also plays the protagonist of the five other Mission Impossible movies. The director Christopher McQuarrie has also directed other action films such as The Way of the Gun and Jack Reacher. Tom Cruise is also the protagonist in Jack Reacher. In this film, the protagonist has to prevent an explosion that is going to cause a huge amount of damage. Its a group of terrorists that wants to detonate nuclear bombs. The protagonist has to get there in time to disarm the bombs and he goes through a lot of fighting and stunts, and in the end he disarms it just in time.

Another example of an action film is Spectre, directed by Sam Mendes. This film is part of the James Bond action movie series. This film takes place in the famous cities of Mexico City and Rome. Daniel Craig plays the protagonist in this film and he also plays the protagonist of five other James Bond films. The director Sam Mendes has also directed other action films such as Jarhead and Skyfall. Daniel Craig is also the protagonist in Skyfall which is another James Bond film. In this film, the protagonist has to overcome and global criminal organization, Spectre. He has to stop the antagonist’s plan of making a global surveillance network and he has to do it before it’s too late. This film contains many action packed fighting scenes and stunts.
